Abstract

|
The purpose of this paper is to find out the existence state & reasons of the inpatients guardians in the hospital and their opinion about improvement method.
The 302 inpatients at two general hospitals in Pusan, Korea responded to interview which was done at July 15, 18, 1996.
Main results of the study are summerized as follows.
1. Among total inpatients, the ratio of the inpatient guardians who stayed with the inpatients was 86.8%, and the ratio of paid guardians was 3.0% and 10.0% of the inpatients had no guardians.
The relationship between inpatients and guardians was spouse (44.4%), parents (26.4%), son & daughter (18.7%).
2. Seeing the guardians staying time, the ratio of 20-24 hours in a day was 41.5%, under 4 hours was 20.4%, 4-8 hours was 13.0%. Major reasons for staying with the inpatients were individual nursing care (72.4%), to soothe patients (37.5%), to help patient´s meal (30.0%), and to facilitate communication between inpatient and medical staff (24.4%).
3. Suppose the hospital takes full responsibility of the patient nursing care, the 63.8% of the guardians still intend to stay with the patient, the 28.3% of the guardians don´t intend to stay with patient if additional cost don´t exist. The 7.9% of the guardians don´t intend to stay with patient inspite of additional cost. Those who do not intend to stay stated that they have to take care of the home affairs (46.5%) and go to work (24.8%).
4. Suppose the hospital takes full responsibility of the inpatient nursing care on additional cost, the 67.3% of the patients approved that and the 93.9% of them expected the one-day additional cost to be under the 30 thousands won.
